EIDBI explained: What Minnesota families should know
If your child has autism and your family lives in Minnesota, there is a program that might pay for their therapy. Most families we talk to have never heard of it.
It is called EIDBI.
EIDBI stands for Early Intensive Developmental and Behavioral Intervention. It is a benefit through Minnesota Medical Assistance, the state’s Medicaid program.
What does it cover?
EIDBI covers therapy for children and young people under 21 who have autism or a related developmental condition. That includes ABA therapy, speech therapy, and occupational therapy.
It also covers evaluations, treatment planning, supervision, and parent training.
If your child qualifies, their therapy could be fully covered. No copays. No surprise bills.
Who qualifies?
Your child must be under 21 years old. They must have a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder or a related condition, confirmed by a CMDE. They must be enrolled in Medical Assistance, MinnesotaCare, TEFRA, or another qualifying health care program.
If you are not sure whether your child qualifies, call us. We do this every day.
What if I do not have Medical Assistance?
Your child may still be able to receive therapy. It might be covered under a different part of your plan. Call us and we will help you understand your options.
What if my child does not have a diagnosis yet?
That is okay. You can still call us. We offer free evaluations and we can help you figure out the next step.
Why have I never heard of EIDBI?
We hear this all the time. EIDBI is not well known outside of the therapy world. Many families do not find out about it until they have been searching for months. Some hear about it from their pediatrician. Others from a friend, a school social worker, or a late night Google search.
However you found out, you are here now. That is what matters.
